The real problem is a grim social landscape of school shootings, poverty and global warming. A group of researchers in Britain now propose another, at least partial, explanation: We talk about mental disorders so much. This hypothesis is called “prevalence inflation.” It holds that our society has become so saturated with discussion of mental health that young people may interpret mild, transient suffering as symptoms of a medical disorder.

It seems like everyone wants to live longer these days. But a recent survey found that Americans are no longer just looking for ways to live longer: they want to be healthier while doing so. In a poll of 2,200 American adults, Medtronic and Morning Consult asked participants if they would prefer to live a shorter, healthier life or a longer life with health issues. The results show that 62% agree or partly agree with feeling concerned that they won't be as healthy or will be in pain if they live a longer life. The actions that people say they're taking to increase their lifespan are eating healthy, exercising and taking preventative health measures.

British billionaire and former owner of the Tottenham Hotspur Football Club Joe Lewis arrives at federal court for his sentencing in an insider trading case on April 4, 2024, in New York City. Multiple studies have shown how irregular work hours can harm overall health and social life, but the new paper views the relationship through a “life-course” approach, observing how work patterns affect health throughout adulthood instead of one point in time. Despite the challenges of today’s work schedules, health experts say there are strategies people can use to mitigate the negative impacts. Additionally, still having some kind of routine or schedule around that shift can make it easier to fit in those health-promoting activities — especially sleep, Yao added. And past research has found that refraining from eating late at night counteracts the negative effects of shift work on health, he added.
